Garage Rock Radio News And Reviews from April 2003

April 30, 2003 - This week's pick for Fav Song Of The Week was a no-brainer. Its track 1 side 1 disk 1 from the original Nuggets Double LP. If you've never heard "I Had Too Much To Dream" by The Electric Prunes, please check it out! Its another song with the "Boy Misses Girl" theme. This guy dreamt of her so vivdly last night that he's too freaked out to face the day. The music and the lyrics go so well together, making this a Garage classic!

If you haven't heard the Teenage Wasteland the last few weeks, you have missed a great new song by the Bristols. Their cover of Beatle Pete Best's hit "The Way I Feel About You" has been played about 4 times now in recent TW shows. This UK band features a French female vocalist by the name of Fabienne Del Sol, whose voice is sultry and alluring. Go to the TW archive and listen to it!

April 22, 2003 - Little Steven is changing around his Underground Garage web site, it is UNDER CONSTRUCTION! A link that as of today will take you to the new site is HERE. The link on that page for "Archived Shows" produces a blank page! I can't get to the UG archive of the 4/13/03 show so I only reviewed the TW show for 4/13.

Our Fav Song Of The Week is "A Taste Of The Same" by The Bad Seeds. The sad singer made some mistakes in his relationship and the girl went and found another man! What's a guy to do? Well, don't just sit around all sad-faced, first get to the gym and lift some weights and your spirits! Now that you've improved physcially, work that brain! Get a nice book (try "In he Bedroom" by Andre Dubus, 7 short stories, quick read) or check on line for Metamorphosis by Kafka or The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. Now that you'll have something to discuss with the next woman, pray for strength and guidance and go back into the mix!

April 13, 2003 - Little Steven has yet to post last week's Underground Garage archive on his site, so its not reviewed here yet. [OK, he posted it and the review is here now, under the TW review. Check out "Help You Anne" by The Lyres if you've never heard it!]

As you all know, I rate the songs on the TW and UG each week. Sometimes the same exact song gets a different rating each time I hear it! Some songs grow on me when I hear them again. The ratings are more or less subjective anyway and I might be in a different mood from week to week, or even day to day. I generally rate Doo-Wopp songs high because I think that they are the "garage" music of the late 50s/early 60s, made on a budget and with great enthusiasm, just like Garage Rock. I rate Punk high for the same reasons. I've been told that Rockabilly is the garage music of the south so I'll be rating those songs higher now.

I've learned via sources at WFMU that Bill Kelly's Premium CD, "Toad Lickin' Good", will be shipping this summer, in June or July. SO if you pledged like we did, hang on a little longer, the CD is coming!

We are approaching our server memory capacity of 100MB and that poses a dilemma for us. I don't want to take any MP3s off the site, so I'd like to buy another 100MB of server space. Soon we'll be selling GarageRockRadio T-shirts and caps and mugs and the like to help offset the costs associated with running this web site. There may also be an offering of a CD that mirrors everything on this site. What do you think of these ideas? E-mail me please!

This weeks FAV is the angry garage punk song, "You Must Be a Witch" by The Lollipop Shoppe. There is a long list of songs about 60s chicks gone bad, and this is high on that list. The 60s girls were experiencing new found freedoms and were coming out from Under The Thumbs of their men, despite what Mick Jagger had to say. But when they got too bad, there was always a local Garage Rock band to sing a song about them and bring them down a peg! Bill Kelly must have played this from vinyl because it pops a bit and starts off with low volume, but the signal overcomes the noise, this rocker can't be held back!
