January 31, 2003 - NEW! Now you can Search our playlist database to see if a Song or Artist has been played on Teenage Wasteland or Underground Garage! The results will show you the show, date, title, artist, start time, rating and comments for any titles or artists that match what you enter to search on. Right now, only the last few weeks of playlists are in the database, we will expand it in the future.
January 30, 2003 - Work continues on the database and data is being added. I am now rating the songs I review on a scale from 1 (worst) to 10 (best). I'll be posting a table for each show each week of all songs rated 4 or better. In Teenage Wasteland news, we heard last show that Bill Kelly has made a 26 track Garage CD which will be given away to people who pledge a certain amount in next month's WFMU fund drive. January 24, 2003 - Coming Soon! We've been working on creating a database of all the songs and artists in all the playlists on the web sites of the Teenage Wasteland and the Underground Garage. The intent is to make it searchable from our site, so you can see if and when an artist or a song was played. Due to this work, this week's review will be short.
In the January 19, 2003 edition of the Teenage Wasteland, listen to "Itchycoo Park" by The Small Faces, a well known 60s psych pop hit. Go on to "Pain" by the Midknights [0:27:42] and "Its Not Real" by The Ravin' Blues [1:05:36]. Both are genuine 60s Garage Rockers.
In the January 19, 2003 edition of the Underground Garage, the first song is the amazing "7 And 7 Is" by Love [0:00:43], a driving 60s punker hit. "Trash" by The New York Dolls [0:47:33] is a fun 70s punk song sung by David Johansen, a.k.a. Buster Poindexter ("Hot Hot Hot"). "Tin Soldier" by The Small Faces [1:20:20] was another 60s hit by these Brits with Steve Marriot, later of Humble Pie, on vocals.
January 17, 2003 - Headline: Greatest Song Identified! Bill Kelly announced on this week's Teenage Wasteland show (January 12th, 2003) that "Liar Liar" by The Castaways [0:12:18] is the "greatest song of all time"! I'd have to say that he's not far off. This gem has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in the 70s on the WCBS-FM, New York's oldies station. A steady drum beat holds the pace while the Farfisa organ and rhythm guitars fill out the musical framework that supports the sad but common lyrics in the 60s of a girl who had done her man wrong. Speaking of wrong... if you listen to Liar Liar from this show, you'll hear that the record Bill played is... WARPED!!! Darn! I was all set to include an MP3 of this great song on our MP3 files page, but I'll have to wait until Bill gets it on CD or it shows up on The Underground Garage. In addition to being warped, it also sounds like the needle on his turntable is going bad or loaded with record fuzz, because two songs after "Liar Liar" came "Imagination" by the Quotations (one of my favorite Doo Wops, a New York classic!) [0:17:01] and it sounded fuzzy also. Of course it could just be that these records are really old! At [0:31:41] we hear another great Doo Wop, "Village of Love" by Nathaniel Mayer and The Fabulous Twilights, two Doo Wops in one show, WOW! Next song, "Shadow" by Thee Headcoatees [0:33:43] is notable as a Ramones clone song.
Speaking of greatest songs ever, how about "Just Like Me" by Paul Revere and The Raiders! [0:41:37] This much copied four chord structure forms the background for amazingly emotional singing and a loooong (for the mid 60s) guitar solo featuring dueling guitars! The Charms are a new band that I really like. At [0:45:56] we hear "Tragic", which takes a riff from "Liar Liar". Also great by them is "Saturday", heard on past TW shows. "Poor Man" by The High Tensions [0:54:07] is an interesting 60s Garage punkrocker, as is "The Other Way Around" by The Heathens [1:02:20] (looong guitar solo, also sounded warped). "Russian Spy and I" by The Regents [1:19:08] is an eastern flavored 60s tune with a rave-up in the middle.
"Get Away" by The Swingin' Lamp Liters [1:24:00] is possibly the best non-charting Garage song ('66 from Alabama) from this show. Organ and guitar with decent vocals are featured in this nice tune which is similar to "I'm Down" by The Animals. "Masculine Intuition" by The Music Machine [1:43:49], who are known for their monster hit "Talk Talk", is a fair 60s rocker. "Not This Time" by The Gloryholes [1:47:21] is a notable fast 60s inspired punk rocker. The show ends with the fifth novelty song in this group. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and The Ballad of Irving" gave me a chuckle.
Meanwhile, in the Underground Garage, Little Steven has rerouted the "Click Here To Listen" link for the 1.5.03 show so that it correctly plays that show! Thanks Steven! See last week's news below for some words on that show.
According to the set list, The Underground Garage show for 1.12.03 starts with a Garage Rock standard, "Gloria" by Them (Van Morrison on vocals), many bands learned this one in the 60s. However, the show that plays when you click the link doesn't start with Gloria, but with "Gimme Some Lovin"! In any case, "Once Before" by The Remains [0:39:12] is in this show and in our MP3 archive as well! "Rosalyn" by Pretty Things [0:54:39] is a popular Brit Garage rocker. "Magic in the Air" by The Attack [1:12:46] is a somewhat psychedelic offering. At [1:18:46] we have "Incense and Peppermints" by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, but Steven... you list the title as "Itchycoo Park" in the Playlist! This classic is on the soundtrack of the first Austin Powers movie and was performed by the actual band in the movie "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls". "Circles" by The Who [1:32:32] is an interesting early work by this famous group who had just changed their name from The High Numbers. Near the end of the show, we have "Swallow My Pride" by the fabulous Ramones [1:40:07], from their second album, Leave Home. It should be noted that each and every song on The Ramones' first three albums - The Ramones, Leave Home, and Rocket To Russia - are great songs!

January 9, 2003 - It appears that WYNU, which broadcasts Plastic Tales every Monday night, IS webcasting again! You can listen to the show by heading to
http://wnyu.nyu.edu/wnyu.ram for their live Real Audio stream. They have not updated their MP3 archives in a long time, there are only 2 shows available from 04/01/02 and 04/08/02. The most recent Real Audio stream, available in both 20k and 67.4K, is from 12/02/02.
Little Steven has a bad link on his Underground Garage site. The "Click Here To Listen" link for the 1.5.03 archive plays the 12.29.02 show! The Set List is accurate, and I assume they will post the correct archive soon. When they do, head to Set 3 to hear "Love is a Beautiful Thing" by the Rascals, a not often played cut by this 60s supergroup. Go ahead to Set 4 to hear "Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" by the Jefferson Airplane, followed by "Itchycoo Park" by Small Faces. Until they post that show, check out the first and third songs from the 12.29.02 show - "The Shape of Things To Come" by Max Frost and the Troopers, and "Lies" by the Knickerbockers, both from Rhino Records' Nuggets CD. "Shape" is the title song from the amazing swinging 60s flick "Wild in the Streets" starring Christopher Jones (who actually sang "Shape", backed by The Arrows), Shelly Winters, and even Richard Prior. "Lies" is a Beatles sound-alike. Other 60s tunes from this show include "Anyway You Want It" - Dave Clark Five, "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" - Yardbirds, "Eight Days a Week" - Beatles, "Laugh Laugh" - Beau Brummels, "Rosalyn" - Pretty Things, and the Outro each and every week: "Blues Theme" - Dave Allan and The Arrows.
Regarding non-60s bands - Little Steven plays a Bruce Springsteen song just about every week. Why? Because he can. There is no other reason that Bruce should be on a show like this! He also plays a Ramones song almost every week. Why? Because the Ramones were the best Garage band of the 70s. Although their music is faster and louder and even more stripped down than many 60s Garagers, they retain the flavor and some of the subject matter of their older fore-rockers. Steven doesnt play the new "The" groups that are out today and are considered by some to be Garage, such as The White Stripes (which sound Exactly like The Buzzcocks to me), The Vines, The Hives, etc. But he has played The Apples In Stereo ("Please" is near the end of the 12.29.02 show), as has Bill Kelly ("Signal In The Sky" from Teenage Wasteland is Amazing!!). I'd like both shows to go back to some of the pre - Atlantic Records debut material from The Donnas, who used to sound just like the Ramones, but now sound like The Runaways meet Kiss. By now you must have heard "Take It Off" from "The Donnas Spend The Night", track 2. The album is OK but the girls (who have all taken the first name of Donna) apparently felt they needed a gimmick and decided that a slut image would be it, as if we don't have way too much of that today already! For some older Donnas, go to their web site www.thedonnas.com and listen to "Lana and Stevie" or "Skintight", those cuts Rock!
The Teenage Wasteland show of 01/05/03 contains 3 of the Best 60s Garage Rock songs ever made! Check out "99th Floor" - The Moving Sidewalks (in our MP3 archive too!), "I'll Come Again" - The Legends, and "Ya Ha Be Be" - The Bel-Aires. The quality of the 96K MP3 archive at the Teenage Wasteland site is outstanding!
